The Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering is one of our four faculties at the htw saar. The faculty currently offers more than 700 students a practical, application-oriented and international range of courses with extensive support throughout their studies.
In 2009, the School of Architecture (Schule für Architektur Saar – SAS) and the Department of Civil Engineering were merged to form the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering with the aim of creating a single institution that would integrate the planning and construction of regionally relevant buildings.
The School of Architecture Saar represents the field of architecture studies and is located at the Göttelborn campus - a former mine site 16 km from the Saarland state capital. With an inspiring working atmosphere at a culturally historic location, our students have access to a range of rooms that be used for lectures and seminars and are open to them 24/7. Our focus is on topics such as:
- Issues created by current demographic changes and the resulting structural transformations of urban and rural spaces
- Building refurbishment and upgrading
- The rejuvenation and re-use of brownfield sites
- Regional building culture
The Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering departments are located at our central Alt-Saarbrücken Campus. At the Alt-Saarbrücken Campus, our students have access to a range of laboratories, such as the labs for structural engineering, urban water management, hydraulic engineering, and road engineering. Here our core topics include:
- Structural planning with a variety of materials
- Sustainable approaches to shaping the environment &
local infrastructure (water, waste & transport) - Energy use & future mobility
- Cost-effective & sustainable construction
Related areas for both departments include climate protection and energy efficiency, topics that are highly relevant in today’s world.
We are particularly proud to offer the trinational Master’s program ‘European Construction Management’(Europäisches Baumangement / Génie civil et management enEuruope) which is run in conjunction with Université de Lorraine and Université du Luxembourg. Research in the field of industrial culture is interdisciplinary and interinstitutional in nature, involving collaborative projects between researchers working in architecture, civil engineering, materials technology, art history, sociology and tourism management.
Much of this work is focused on the industrial and social legacy of the coalmining and steel-producing industries that have been so important to the SaarLorLux region, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte, Carreau Wendel in France and Belval in Luxembourg. Research collaborations with other international sites are also ongoing.
Regular events, international cooperations, study trips and joint, hands-on projects, as well as research projects are part of the multifaceted semester program in all study areas and provide an excellent foundation our high standard of quality in teaching and research.
Degree programs
Demands on how we would like to live in the future are becoming more and more complex. As architects, civil engineers and environmental engineers, our graduates help shape the environment and our living spaces without losing sight of future issues. Our degree programs cover all aspects of our subjects - the technical, ecological, as well as the design aspects.
- Architecture (Bachelor and Master's program)
- Civil Engineering (Bachelor and Master's program)
- Environmental Engineering (Bachelor program)
- European Construction Management (Bachelor and Master’s program)
Equipment and laboratories
In the course of their studies, our students have 18 laboratories at their disposal for standard experiments, student research projects, student internships, seminar papers and theses. Lab facilities are also used for research and development work, as well as special studies within the framework of projects.
Research and knowledge transfer
The faculty is highly active in interdisciplinary and cross-university research.
International cooperations
Within the framework of international cooperations, we send students abroad for exchange programs, lecturers are invited to give lectures on special topics, and joint courses are held in the form of workshops.
Our in-house research institutes organize international colloquia in which our students take an active role. We closely link teaching and research e.g. with student workshops for Master’s students and international student seminars that are run in cooperation with the following institutions:
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture (ENSA) in Nancy (France)
- Brno University of Technology (BUT) in Brno (Czech Republic)
- Università degli Studi in Florence (Italy)
- and other international partners
