Saarbrücken is a city worth visiting! Located in the middle of Europe, its proximity to France and Luxembourg gives it an international flair. However, being one of the smaller German federal states means that no matter how international Saarbrücken is, it never loses its small-town friendliness.
Saarbrücken isn't solely a city for students. It's small enough that you'll bump into acquaintances during your Saturday shopping spree, yet large enough that it's not the same crowd every weekend. The quintessential student quarter is the Nauwieser Viertel. It's a vibrant mix of alternative shops, cozy pubs, and restaurants, with a high density of shared living spaces, making it a popular hangout for students. Otherwise, students disperse evenly across the diverse array of pubs scattered throughout the city center in the evenings.
The Saarland mentality is perhaps best encapsulated in the oft-quoted phrase: "Hauptsach gudd gess." (For non-Saarlanders: the main thing is to eat well.) While one can forgo many things here, good food and drink are non-negotiable. Accordingly, Saarbrücken boasts a high density of pubs and restaurants. Yet, it's not uncommon to find your favorite spot fully occupied on an ordinary weekday. A central meeting point is the St. Johanner Markt, which exudes a somewhat southern European piazza atmosphere. At the slightest touch of warming sunlight, everyone gathers here until late into the evening, ensuring that beer consumption remains at a high level.
In addition to culinary delights, Saarbrücken's cultural offerings are impressive as well. The Saarland State Theater, featuring opera, ballet, and theater, along with the Saarland Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Modern Gallery, provide ample variety. Furthermore, there are several small-scale performance venues adding to the cultural richness of the city.
Moreover, Saarbrücken is located in the heart of Europe and many wonderful cities are not too far away!
