These pages provide information on the correct and permissible handling of personal data in everyday university life. The purpose of data protection is to protect individuals from misuse of their personal data.
It is not the data that is protected, but people's right to informational self-determination. The basic idea is that the individual - provided there is no relevant legal basis - can decide for themselves which of their personal information, such as home address, date of birth, telephone number, e-mail address, bank account number, religious affiliation, personnel number, etc., is made accessible to whom and when, and how it is used. In its negative form, the scope of protection also includes the so-called "right not to know".
The increasing penetration of information and communication technologies into all areas of learning and work in the university world requires greater awareness of the conscientious and responsible handling of personal data. This is the best basis for effective data protection.
