To help you get the most out of the bridge courses, we organize our study groups by field of study and prior knowledge. Many of our students begin their studies with very different high school diplomas (Gymnasium, FOS Business, FOS Technology, etc.). As a result, their prior knowledge varies widely. Topics that were taught in great depth at some schools may have been covered only superficially—or not at all—at others.
You’ll automatically receive more information about the placement test via email after you register.
At the start of the winter semester, htw saar offers free English bridge courses to help you prepare for your studies. This program is open to all prospective students who have applied to study at htw saar—regardless of whether they have already received an offer of admission.
Many degree programs require English proficiency at the B1 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The bridge courses help you build any missing skills or brush up on your English so that you can start your studies well-prepared.
To assess your current English proficiency, you must take a placement test after registering. You will have 90 minutes to complete the test. You cannot participate in the bridge courses without taking this test. You will receive further information and access to the test after registering.
If you have already demonstrated English proficiency at the B1 level on the test, you will not be placed in a bridge course, as the bridge courses only cover the basics. Participation would not be beneficial in that case.
Important: Participation in the bridge courses does not guarantee a spot in a degree program and does not replace an official admission offer.
Why is it worth participating?
The bridge courses offer you multiple benefits:
If you have any problems or questions about the English bridge courses, please send an email to brueckenkurse@htwsaar.de orsebastian.barth@htwsaar.de.
The math bridge courses cover topics from grades 10–12 or 13. This means that the courses only review high school material and do not cover any university-level content in advance. The content covered varies by group and degree program, with each focusing on program-specific topics.
If you’d like to know what content to expect later in your studies, we recommend taking a look at the module database.
For English, the required foreign language, several degree programs prefer that students have prior knowledge at the level of the Mittlerer Bildungsabschluss (MBA). This corresponds to Level B1 (Independent User) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages developed by the Council of Europe. Therefore, we offer the English Bridge Course for students with little or no prior knowledge (at the A1 or A2 level).
No English bridge courses are offered for the international degree programs (International Business, International Tourism Management, and Mechanical Engineering), as the required entry level for these programs is higher than that of the bridge course.
However, a math bridge course is offered for the international degree programs.
Anyone who has applied for a degree program at htw saar is eligible to participate. Even applicants who have not yet received an offer of admission can register via the registration tool. Login credentials will be sent automatically by email after the application deadline.
If you have any questions, please contact brueckenkursenoSpam@noSpamhtwsaarnoSpam.de.
Please note that participation in the bridge courses does NOT constitute an offer of admission.
