As you plan your educational journey in Germany, it's important to understand the financial aspects of studying and living here. In Germany, all students at all higher education institutions must pay a semester contribution, the so-called semester fee which is not a tuition fee. The semester fee covers students' contributions to student services (canteen, sports and cultural program, psychological counselling etc.) and the student government (the so-called ‘AStA’). Students without an EHIC/European health insurance card / whose private insurance from their home country has been assessed as not sufficient, need to add monthly costs for the statutory health insurance, currently ca. 130€.
