Research topics

The FTS unfolds its potential in an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to issues: from psychological to engineering topics, from traffic planning to operator models, everything is covered by the combination of skills of the members.

The FTS works at the interface between technology, society and business. Our research is divided into four central areas of expertise:

1. integrated mobility concepts & urban planning

In this area, the FTS interlinks the physical design of living spaces with modern forms of movement.

  • Urban planning & neighborhood design: Holistic planning of livable urban spaces and the design of resilient neighborhoods that combine mobility needs and quality of stay.
  • Modeling & implementation: Holistic mobility concepts for local, regional and urban spaces.
  • Intermodality: Development of innovative passenger transport concepts and mobility hubs for seamlessly linking modes of transport.
  • Last-Mile-Solutions: Conceptual planning and optimization of mobility on the "last mile".
  • Infrastructure & Safety: Optimization of road operations and continuous improvement of general road safety.

2. automated driving & intelligent systems

The FTS researches the technological basis for automated driving and communication between road users.

  • Vehicle technology: Development of technical systems for (non-)automated mobility (e.g. ADAS, battery management, consumption optimization).
  • Autonomy & Cooperation: Research into automated driving functions and concepts for cooperative driving.
  • V2X communication: Direct networking between vehicles, infrastructure and people.
  • Smart Systems: Use of agent systems and in-vehicle data communication (IVN).

3. digital security, data & business models

Data is the fuel of the new mobility. The AGV ensures that it is used safely and creates new economic value.

  • Cybersecurity & data protection: Secure communication solutions and decentralized identification systems.
  • Safety: Functional safety of technical solutions.
  • Business transformation: Identification and development of data-driven business models for the transportation industry.
  • Market analysis: Effects of automation on market structures.

4. logistics, ecology & sustainable energy systems

Here, the FTS bundles research into resource efficiency and the physical foundations of the drive transition.

  • Energy research: Cross-sector research into sustainable energy sources, charging infrastructures and the integration of mobile storage systems into the energy grid.
  • Sustainable logistics: Simulation and optimization of intermodal logistics chains, in particular taking (e)two-wheel mobility into account.
  • Green Transport: Supporting the ecological transformation in the transport industry.
  • People & Technology: Analysis of the social impact and user acceptance of technological innovations.
