Funding Opportunities for Studying Abroad

You can receive an ERASMUS+ or PROMOS grant (depending on your destination) for your study abroad at one of htw saar's partner universities through the International Office of htw saar.

Generally, the difference can be remembered as follows: ERASMUS+ is the name of the funding program within Europe, while PROMOS is the name of the funding program for countries outside Europe.

A selection of additional funding opportunities that are NOT managed by the International Office can be found on this page.

In Germany, there are an increasing number of scholarships that contribute to promoting equal opportunities in education. Such scholarships and funding programs can make a significant difference by enabling students to fully concentrate on their studies – even abroad, where additional costs often arise.

Here you can find information on further funding opportunities and their contact points:

ERASMUS + & PROMOS

Only the ERASMUS+ funding for partner universities in Europe as well as the PROMOS funding for oversea partner universities are organised by the International  Office at htw saar- once you have been accepted by the partner university and if you have applied until 15 January via the online application portal.
For all other funding opportunities, please contact the relevant offices.

ERASMUS+ & PROMOS

Only ERASMUS+ funding for partner universities in Europe and PROMOS funding for partner universities overseas are organized through the International Office after the partner university has confirmed your acceptance, provided you applied in a timely manner by January 15 via the onlineapplication portal by January 15, have been accepted by the partner university, and are traveling abroad.
For all other funding opportunities, please contact the respective responsible offices.

When you submit your application to the International Office at htw saar to study abroad in ERASMUS+ countries, you will automatically receive funding under the ERASMUS+ program, provided that htw saar receives the funds requested annually, you have applied by the deadline via the htw saar online application portal, and you have been accepted by both the htw saar selection committee and the respective partner university abroad. You no longer need to apply separately for ERASMUS+.

Students receive financial grants for their study abroad period, based on the destination country, in accordance with the specified ERASMUS+ funding rates.
The funding rates are set nationally by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
The mobility grant for an ERASMUS+ study period is tiered by country group, based
on the varying costs of living in the destination countries. Students may receive additional travel days to support sustainable travel.
There is also the option to receive a monthly ERASMUS+ supplement in addition to the monthly ERASMUS+ country rate for your destination country.
This is intended to provide special support to students for whom a stay abroad may pose a greater challenge. Please note: However, the additional monthly funding can only be provided for one of the aforementioned supplements.

All selected ERASMUS+ students will receive further information regarding the exact amount of the financial grant and the funding period along with the official documents from the htw saar International Office prior to their ERASMUS+ stay, typically 1–2 months before departure.

The ERASMUS higher education program, one of the European Union’s great success stories, has been promoting cross-border mobility among students, faculty, and university staff in Europe since 1987.
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s program for education, youth, and sports. Erasmus+ brings together the previous EU programs for lifelong learning, youth, and sports, as well as the European cooperation programs in higher education.
Designed to run for seven years, the program aims to improve skills and employability and to advance the modernization of general and vocational education and training systems, as well as child and youth services.

Generally eligible for ERASMUS+ funding are students, faculty, and staff members of htw saar who can be sent to htw saar’s partner universities:

Other Scholarship Opportunities

Albatros—the Student Aid Organization of the Working Group on Higher Education and Business (Arbeitskreis Hochschule und Wirtschaft e.V.)

Funding is primarily focused on study or internship stays outside Europe for students in the fields of business and engineering. Among the applicants, those with the highest (unweighted) grade point average will be selected for funding. Bachelor’s students must have passed all exams from the first three semesters. Proof of above-average commitment is desirable, for example through active participation in student council work or other volunteer activities.

Network for Development Policy Education

For 55 years, the ASA Program has been supporting young people from various professional and academic backgrounds who want to understand and change global interconnections. Each year, the ASA Program awards up to 280 scholarships to young people between the ages of 21 and 30 who are studying in Germany or have completed a dual or school-based vocational training program, as well as to recent graduates who received their bachelor’s degree less than 18 months ago.

Numerous universities, including htw saar, offer the Germany Scholarship. The Germany Scholarship supports students whose track record suggests they will achieve outstanding results in their studies and careers. The definition of “achievement” underlying the scholarship is deliberately broad: It includes not only good grades and academic performance but also a willingness to take on responsibility and the successful overcoming of obstacles in one’s personal and educational journey. Scholarship recipients receive a monthly grant of 300 euros (in addition to BAföG benefits), which is not means-tested, for at least two semesters and no longer than the standard period of study.

The Fulbright Commission’s study scholarships are designed to deepen students’ academic studies through a 4- to 9-month full-time program at recognized U.S. institutions of higher education at the graduate level.
Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree by the time the fellowship begins are eligible to apply.
Funding is provided for a 4- to 9-month program beginning in August/September.
The scholarship includes, among other things, up to 3,850 U.S. dollars per month to help cover living expenses and tuition at the host institution.

https://www.fulbright.de/programs-for-germans

Those looking for additional scholarships and other funding programs can use the DAAD database or, for example, myStipendium.de. Using a matching process, students can find out exactly which scholarships and other forms of financial aid they are eligible to apply for with just a few clicks.

Government Funding Opportunities

BAföG for Study Abroad is financial aid provided by the government for studying abroad, spending a semester abroad, or completing an internship abroad in European and non-European countries.
If you are already receiving domestic BAföG, you are guaranteed to receive BAföG for studying abroad.
If you do not receive domestic BAföG, you may still be eligible for BAföG for studying abroad, as the higher costs associated with studying abroad make government funding a possibility.
The contact person at htw saar for questions regarding BAföG for studies abroad is the BAföG coordinator in your faculty.
General information from the DAAD on BAföG for studies abroad:
https://www.daad.de/de/im-ausland-studieren-forschen-lehren/stipendien-finanzierung/auslands-bafoeg/
Information from the German Student Services (Deutsches Studierendenwerk) on BAföG abroad

The federal government’s education loan program offers students a low-interest loan that can be tailored to their individual needs. The education loan does not replace BAföG funding and can even be taken out in addition to BAföG. However, there is no legal entitlement to the education loan, as it is a program with a fixed budget. If the annual total is exceeded, the date the application is received by the Federal Administrative Office determines eligibility.
