To help you get off to a good start in your new neighborhood, here are a few tips from us:
Put your name on the mailbox and doorbell (if your landlord hasn’t already done so). Your mail won’t be delivered if your name isn’t on the mailbox. You don’t need to register with the post office.
Set up phone, internet, and any other utilities (gas, electricity); check what’s included in your lease and what you need to or can arrange on your own. It’s worth comparing offers, and online portals can be helpful for this. If you don’t take any action, you’ll automatically be signed up with the default provider, which usually isn’t the cheapest (this doesn’t apply to internet).
Introduce yourself to your neighbors once you’ve settled in a bit—this isn’t required, of course, but it’s a way to get to know people quickly; it’s considered polite and also lets you know who your neighbors are.
Quiet hours. Generally, there’s a noise curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. so everyone can sleep well. This means you should keep your music quiet and, for example, avoid running your washing machine during this time.
Cleaning duties. In many apartment buildings, there are schedules that specify which tenant is responsible for cleaning the hallway or the sidewalk in front of the building. Find out when it’s your turn!
Tap water in Germany is carefully tested, so it’s generally perfectly suitable for drinking and cooking. Please use it responsibly and sustainably.
