Waste Separation in Germany

Did you know that we Germans are the undisputed world champions in waste separation? Using our blue, yellow, green, and black bins, we collect our waste separately and sort it for recycling, which benefits the environment.

Proper waste separation is required by law in Germany

If the trash bins aren’t filled as intended, they won’t be picked up. The collection staff will then attach a sticker explaining why the bins weren’t emptied and ask that the waste be sorted again. Fines may also be imposed.

  • Packaging is collected in different waste bins depending on the type of material
  • Different components of packaging should be separated from one another
  • Packaging should not be stacked and does not need to be washed
  • It’s best to sort your trash at home into different bins

Our tutor Miriam has created a short explanatory video on this topic
