The mentoring program "Balu und Du," which is being implemented by the Faculty of Social Sciences at htw saar in collaboration with AWO Saarland, is receiving a grant of €15,000. The donation comes from the Losheim-based company Homanit and the non-profit organization Deutschland rundet auf, securing funding for the next three project cycles.
"Balu und Du" brings together students of social work and childhood education (Balus) with elementary school children aged six to ten (Moglis). Over two semesters, the tandems meet once a week for joint activities. The focus is on time, attention, and shared experiences: for example, trips to the countryside, visits to the library, or trips to the swimming pool or cinema. The funding will enable the pocket money for the participating children to be financed in the next three rounds.
The project also offers students valuable practical experience. Their involvement is accompanied by a specialist seminar at htw saar, regular reflections, and individual case support.
"Balu und Du" has been in existence nationwide since 2002, and the program was introduced at htw saar in Saarbrücken in 2008. Since then, more than 200 students and just as many children have participated in Saarland.
"Balu und Du combines teaching, social engagement, and personal development in a unique way. Our students take on responsibility, reflect on their actions in a scientifically sound manner, and experience firsthand how effective relationship building can be," says Agnes Jasiok, project manager at htw saar.
Since October 2023, AWO Saarland has been coordinating the project in Saarbrücken, while the accompanying seminar continues to be based at the Faculty of Social Sciences at htw saar. Two rounds have already been successfully completed in this constellation.
