Sustainability at htw saar
Sustainability has been a central theme at htw saar for years. The Fairtrade initiative began as early as 2015, leading to certification as the 14th Fairtrade University in 2017. Since 2018, the “Sustainability Roundtable” has been advancing ideas and projects. The inclusion of sustainability in the title of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, International Relations, and Sustainability (2024) gave the topic even greater prominence.
Since then, a part-time position in the Sustainability Office as well as temporary positions for sustainability communication and greenhouse gas accounting have been created. Priorities for 2025 and 2026 include sustainability reporting, a concept for sustainable mobility, and the integration of sustainability into teaching. With its membership in the German Society for Sustainability at Universities (DGHochN) in 2025, htw saar is now part of a nationwide network. Since 2026, the student body has also been actively involved through an AStA department.
