BAföG stands for “Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz” or – in English – the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act. The goal of BAfög is to create more equal opportunities in the German higher education system. It is a needs-based state student funding system that has been around since 1971. Thanks to BAföG, more than four million people have been able to study since 1971and today, almost one-fifth of students benefit from the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act.
