FAQ

Business economists are at work in almost all areas of our economic system, even where it is not obvious at first glance. From small businesses in the trades, to public companies such as hospitals or waste disposal companies, to large companies in the production or service sector - business economists are needed in many working environments. Whether you want to find a job in the Saarland region or want to get a taste of the big, wide world - with a business administration degree, you have the very best prerequisites for this. Business administration describes the management, control and organization of an economic enterprise and is fundamentally based on the assumption that goods are scarce and therefore economic management of these goods is necessary. The aim of business administration is to describe, explain and support decision-making processes in companies.
The core tasks of business economists are the recording and structuring of cash flows and costs, the purchasing of goods and services, the organization of production, the marketing and distribution of products and services and the analysis of markets. They also recruit and develop personnel, manage information technology and a company's strategy. Which of these specializations suits you best often only becomes clear during your studies.

The breadth of the range of activities and the resulting flexibility will provide you with an interesting and varied working environment and individual career paths for many years after graduation. In addition, business economists are optimally prepared for self-employment. Many of our graduates work as tax consultants, auditors or management consultants. Others continue to run the family business or set up their own company. We prepare you for this in the best possible way in our application-oriented lectures, but also with special lecture series and seminars on start-ups and company formation. We offer you the best possible advice and infrastructure for your successful business start-up.

Our mission is "We impart more than knowledge". This is reflected in all our courses. In addition to the excellent professional competence of our students, we place particular emphasis on methodological competence, i.e. the ability to transfer and apply the knowledge acquired to specific challenges, true to our claim of being application-oriented. In order to train critically thinking, independent people, we also develop your social and personal skills during your studies. To this end, we integrate team tasks, practical projects, business skills workshops and social learning into all parts of our curriculum. Our graduates are therefore optimally prepared for the diversity and dynamics of the future world of work.

As part of a seven-semester Bachelor's degree course (with 210 ECTS credits), the Business Administration course provides students with in-depth knowledge in the fields of business administration. This includes accounting and finance, logistics, marketing, human resources management and business informatics. These core subjects are supplemented by content from digital transformation, mathematics and statistics as well as business law, entrepreneurship and economics.

In addition, foreign language and communication skills are deepened. Personal and social skills are also taught in theory and practice. Students are introduced to academic work and acquire the associated interactive working and learning techniques.

In the 5th and 6th semesters, students have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following areas:

  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
  • marketing
  • human resources management
  • Accounting, auditing and finance
  • Business informatics

By attending seminars or project studies, the course can be supplemented as required and individual interests can be taken into account.

Even during the first six semesters, the focus is on application orientation and the acquisition of key qualifications such as the ability to work in a team, entrepreneurial thinking, project management and communication skills. In the 7th semester, the course includes a three-month practical phase in a company or other institution, during which the content of the course is deepened and applied. The practical phase is compulsory. Participation in the cooperative study program can be credited as a practical study phase upon application (individual case assessment), provided that the student has participated in the cooperative study program for at least three semesters, was employed full-time for at least three months during this time and the activities in the company correspond to the course content of the degree program.

The entry level for the languages is B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This corresponds to approximately five years of school English or school French; this is usually the case for both high school graduates and technical college students. Applicants who do not have this level of knowledge will be offered support and advanced courses to reach this level in the course of individual counseling by the language lecturers at htw saar.
