Individuals who do not hold a high school diploma or a university entrance qualification but have acquired special qualifications through vocational training may receive subject-specific admission to htw saar following the successful completion of a trial study period.

The trial period lasts at least two semesters and may extend up to four semesters, depending on the standard duration of study for the respective program. In part-time programs, the trial period is extended accordingly.

Admission Requirements for the Trial Study Program

Admission to a trial study program is granted to applicants who, at the time of application:

1. have obtained a secondary school diploma, 
2. have successfully passed a final examination with a qualifying result (grade of at least 2.5 or at least 80 points in the vocational final examination) in a relevant recognized vocational training program with a standard training period of at least 3 years,
3. can demonstrate the language proficiency required for the program. Proof of program-specific language proficiency is governed by the respective study and examination regulations.

The German language proficiency required for the program can be demonstrated by

• at least six years of attendance at a school where the language of instruction is German, or
• the German Language Test for University Admission (DSH) with a minimum overall score of DSH-2 or an equivalent examination.

Assessment of Suitability

The applicant may apply for an aptitude assessment at htw saar no earlier than after two semesters of trial study, submitting proof of academic performance.
Aptitude is determined if at least two-thirds of the coursework and examinations (40 ECTS) have been successfully completed in accordance with the study and examination regulations.

2. Participation in the program-specific academic advising at htw saar
3. The fully completed application formand the supporting documents listed below must be submitted to htw saar by April 1 of each year at the latest.
4. In addition, an application for a spot in the desired program must be submitted via the application portalby July 15 of each year at the latest.

Applicants for continuing education Bachelor’s programs may be admitted after passing an aptitude test. Further information can be found here.

• Detailed resume with photo
• Complete proof of completed vocational training with a standard training period of at least three years
• Officially certified copies of school leaving certificates or diplomas demonstrating completion of secondary education, as well as the vocational training diploma
• Proof of the required knowledge of the German language, either through at least six years of attendance at a school where German is the language of instruction or through the German Language Test for University Admission (DSH) with a minimum overall score of DSH-2 or an equivalent exam
• Statement detailing all previous attempts to obtain subject-specific university entrance qualifications
• Certificates of participation in the aforementioned academic advising sessions 
• If applicable, program-specific attachments

The university entrance exam is not currently offered at htw saar!

The university entrance exam for obtaining university admission qualifications is administered by a committee.

Composition of the Commission

• A representative of the Ministry of Education serving as chairperson
• Two university professors from the chosen degree program
• as well as two representatives from the Chamber of Labor, the Chamber of Crafts, and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce

Subject matter of the university entrance examination

• The written examination consists of two supervised written exams, each allotted four hours.
• The oral examination is to last 60 minutes. Each candidate is examined individually.

Grading and Results of the University Examination

• The written and oral examinations are graded. The examination is passed if both the written papers and the oral examination have been graded at least “satisfactory.”

Certificate of the university entrance exam results

• The applicant receives a certificate of the university entrance exam results if the exam is passed. They receive written notification if the exam is not passed.
• The certificate of passing the university entrance exam entitles the applicant to enroll in the desired program at htw saar. The university decides on admission to the program (a separate written application is absolutely required).

Retaking the University Entrance Exam

• Anyone who has failed the university entrance exam for a specific degree program may retake it once.
