The cultural management course was definitely worthwhile for me and gave me valuable insights into the cultural sector that I hadn't yet considered as a newly qualified artist. It gave me a deep understanding of the organization, financing and communication of cultural projects. I also acquired a versatile skillset that will benefit me professionally. As an artist in particular, it is important not only to rely on your own creativity, but also to understand the structures and mechanisms of the cultural sector. My studies helped me to combine my artistic practice with entrepreneurial thinking.

Culture shapes our society: theaters, museums, opera houses, festivals and cultural centers are places of encounter, reflection and participation.
But cultural institutions are facing major challenges: Digitalization, social change, funding logics and audience expectations are fundamentally changing cultural work. Cultural management ensures that art not only remains possible, but can also have an impact - both locally and internationally.
Cultural managers play a central role in this environment. They create the framework conditions for artistic ideas to emerge, take effect and have a lasting impact.
Today, the profession requires far more than organizational talent: it combines artistic understanding, business know-how, cultural policy expertise and strong communication skills. Cultural managers operate at the interface between art, society and business management - they mediate between artists, institutions, politics, audiences and sponsors, coordinate artistic productions, develop strategies and new communication formats. They are responsible for budgets, take care of communication, promotion and sponsorship and actively shape transformation processes in the cultural sector.
Our four-semester Master's degree course at htw saar, which was awarded the Saarland State Prize for University Teaching, combines artistic thinking, cultural policy perspectives and economic expertise.
The course is non-consecutive and open to graduates from all disciplines with an interest in culture, the arts and management, in particular from cultural studies, social sciences, humanities, economics or law as well as artistic disciplines - no prior knowledge of business administration is required.
Practical projects, a compulsory internship and interdisciplinary cooperation ensure a close link between theory, research and professional practice.
The course qualifies students for strategic, organizational and managerial activities in the cultural sector - from theaters and museums to the independent scene, administration, foundations or the creative industries.
The aim is to provide management training that is sensitive to culture and the arts, making it possible to implement cultural projects strategically, creatively and sustainably - even without prior knowledge of business administration.
Cultural managers work in museums, theaters, cultural offices, orchestras, foundations, festivals, agencies or in the cultural industry as well as in the independent project sector - in management functions, public relations, fundraising, cultural mediation or cultural policy. The course provides the necessary knowledge and tools - with theory, practice and many opportunities for specialization.

One interdisciplinary degree program - three universities
The Master's in Cultural Management is unique in the German-speaking world: it is the result of close cooperation between the Saarland University of Applied Sciences (htw saar), the Saar University of Music (HfM Saar) and the Saar University of Fine Arts (HBKsaar). This special cooperation creates a study program that combines economic, artistic and cultural perspectives and offers a strong practical orientation.
Students work in interdisciplinary teams with regional and national cultural institutions and develop their own projects during their studies. In this way, they are specifically prepared for responsible activities in the cultural sector.
The Master's in Cultural Management deals with the following key questions, among others:
Wir absolvieren hier viele Projekte und Gruppenarbeiten, wodurch wir schon früh sehen, welche Mechanismen in Sachen Organisation oder Booking greifen. Zudem kooperieren wir viel mit den anderen künstlerischen Hochschulen der Stadt und können selbst entscheiden, ob wir uns eher im Bereich Musik, Theater oder Kunst spezialisieren wollen.
